Empire Camp or Kingdom camp – Which are You Seeking?

Reaching biblical ministry outcomes requires setting your own ministry axioms. These are the focused principles that keep you in your ministry track. They keep accomplishing what you set out do to from the beginning, change lives with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

My first ministry axiom has become; Build the Kingdom (of heaven), Not an Empire. Ministry impact must come first. When I left camp ministry I had become disconnected from the ministry side of camp (why I got into camping), and had become consumed with administration and site development. I was locked into a better must be best syndrome.

It strikes me when reading through the Gospels, that Jesus came to tear down a temple with His earthly ministry and never built a building. I don’t think there is a record of the disciples building a building either. The focus was on building the body of Christ – reaching out with the Gospel – building the heavenly Kingdom.

So we must be careful of our justifications in ambition for development. Is it stewardship or empire building? Proverbs tells us to commit ourselves to the Lord and He will establish our thoughts. If our focus is on the kingdom, God will lead us to the greatest heavenly return in our development decision making.

About the Ordinary Hiker

A Christian camp director for many years, I enjoy ministry and being outdoors. I refer to God's creative wonder as the testimony of creation, a special place where God brings His word to life. Its where I like to be and where God speaks in His gentle voice in the awe of His creative work.
